Horse of a Different Color: One of the companies trying to break into the EV-conversion business is one you’ve heard of: TREMEC. We first saw the manual transmission manufacturer’s electrified 2004 Mustang GT at the 2023 SEMA show in Las Vegas last November. Unlike some other companies racing to reach the starting line, TREMEC got a head start by acquiring existing EV-conversion company Electric GT. TREMEC has taken Electric GT’s 413 EV-swap system (an integrated kit consisting of an electric motor, modular battery, harnesses, power distribution, and instrumentation) and combined it with TREMEC’s expertise in drivetrain components—specifically its reduction gearbox—to create a single, plug-and-play e-crate solution. The equipment has the look and feel of aerospace gear, its industrial……. Two months after first seeing TREMEC’s prototype Mustang at SEMA, we finally got to sample it, and it feels incredibly fast.
